Study of Hematology/Oncology

Janani Ravichandran is senior at Liberty and is studying Hematology/Oncology under the mentorship of Dr. Ayesha Zia. Interested in the intricacies and complications of cancer, Janani chose this topic to gain more understanding of the basis and molecular design of cancer and blood disorders. She was hesitant on pursuing this field because no one in previous years of ISM had chosen this topic. But, after going through ten interviews and finding the perfect mentor she has thoroughly enjoys working with her mentor. Dr. Ayesha Zia is a Pediatric Hematologist/Oncologist at Children’s Medical Center and has helped Janani gain understanding in the diagnosis and treatment of many blood related diseases and different types of cancer. She is inspired by all the strong children who deal with such severe diseases and is passionate about helping them. Janani has no doubt that her ISM journey will take her to new heights and will help her achieve her goal of becoming a successful and compassionate healthcare professional.

Heart-for-a-Heart Campaign by Ashley Nguyen

Ashley Nguyen, a senior at Frisco Liberty High School, has started the Heart-for-a-Heart Campaign in the hopes of raising at least fifteen thousand dollars for the HeartGift Dallas Chapter by the end of May. She is a part of Frisco ISD's Independent Study and Mentorship program that allows high-achieving and driven upperclassmen to explore the real world via in-depth research and one-on-one mentorships with professionals in a topic of their choice. She has been studying Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery under the mentorship of Dr. Kristine Guleserian, one of the surgeons operating on the HeartGift Dallas patients. Ashley is very grateful for the opportunity to work with the HeartGift Foundation over the next five months, and she hopes to raise enough money to save the life of a child with the help of the community.
Please join us in raising funds for the Dallas HeartGift chapter and donate to the Heart for a Heart Campaign.

Neurosurgery Under the Mentorship of Dr. Kim Rickert

Interested in the field of medicine, Liberty High School senior Anishka Kappalayil has chosen the subspecialty of neurosurgery as her topic of study this year in ISM. She has been gaining exposure to the hospital environment and learning about surgical conditions and techniques under the mentorship of UT Southwestern Medical Center’s neurosurgeon, Dr. Kim Rickert. After spending time with her mentor, Anishka has truly come to enjoy and appreciate the medical field as she has acquired a broader perspective of the healthcare field through her mentor visits. For her final product, Anishka and her mentor are planning on writing a medical article regarding grade four blunt cerebrovascular injuries. Upon completion, they hope to publish this article in either “The Journal of Neurosurgery” or “Neurosurgery”.
