ENDORSEMENTS

ISM has taught me how to be comfortable with professionalism and time management skills, both of which will benefit me in college and beyond. Both of these skills are hard to learn and practice with your normal high school classes.

Independent Study and Mentorship has taught me how to communicate effectively, and professionally with others. Sometimes this valuable skill of communication may be overlooked, but communication is essential in a career. ISM is designed to prepare students for future job interviews, responsibilities, and cooperation within the work place. Students have been given the amazing opportunity to explore their dream profession before college, and I would recommend ISM to any student with a passion and motivation towards any field of study.

Due to my time in ISM, it opened up many opportunities for me to work at other Optometry offices. The experience I gained during my internship was not only valuable to getting me a job but also kickstarting my career. The knowledge I got out of the program continues to help me get through college.

ISM is one of the most life-changing experiences I have ever been a part of because I became prepared and excited to accomplish my dreams. The support I received from the community and the knowledge I gained throughout my time in the program were invaluable to obtain at such a young age. I am undoubtedly a new person after the completion of my time in the program and will forever be grateful.

ISM is one of the best choices I made in high school. Most students have to wait until college to pursue an independent study. This program is a tangible way to show professors, advisers and employers your passions and your initiative to learn more about them.

SUCCESS STORIES:

I studied Speech-Language Pathology in ISM. I attend the University of Arkansas and am majoring in Communication Disorders. When I showed my adviser my ISM portfolio, he insisted I apply for the honors college (I was accepted).

My situation is unique because my ISM study wasn't in the field I work in now. However, the benefits of ISM are far beyond career-specific; the professionalism training and course discipline will carry you further than any of your incoming college classmates. Most students get to college without a resume or research experience. ISM gives students this advantage along with writing and interview skills.
Perhaps the best part of ISM was the design of the coursework--all work is assigned at the beginning of each term and due at different points throughout the six weeks. This structure is similar to almost every college course I've taken and teaches students to take initiative, manage their time and avoid procrastination.
